Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
Ideal for autistic adults and individuals who have behavioral health challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and OCD who need intensive, half-day therapy while maintaining their daily routines. This program supports skill-building and independence during transitions from higher levels of care, such as PHP or inpatient stabilization, providing a structured “scaffolding” for real-world success.
At Spectrum Behavioral Care, we recognize that neurodivergent adults require a different approach to outpatient care. Our Los Angeles-based IOP is designed to address the specific sensory, cognitive, and social needs of our clients, ensuring that therapy is an empowering experience rather than an overwhelming one.
Who is it for?
What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured therapeutic bridge. It is designed for those who need more support than a weekly therapy session but do not require 24-hour supervision.
- Intensive Support: Provides three hours of specialized therapy per day.
- Maintain Your Routine: Designed so you can live at home and stay active in your community.
- Clinical Foundation: Uses evidence-based tools like CBT and Solution-Focused Therapy.
- Focus on Independence: Helps you build the “scaffolding” needed for a successful life.
- Neuro-Affirming: Every session honors your unique way of processing the world.
The IOP is ideal for autistic adults and individuals who have behavioral health challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, and OCD.
It is specifically designed for individuals who:
- Need more than weekly therapy: You find that one hour a week isn’t enough to manage daily challenges.
- Are in transition: You are moving from a higher level of care, like PHP or a hospital setting, back to daily life.
- Struggle with daily routines: You need help managing work, school, or social obligations.
- Are navigating the “Services Cliff”: You have aged out of school-based support and need a path to independence.
- Value flexibility: You need intensive, half-day therapy (3 hours/day) so you can still work or attend classes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the ideal candidate for the Autism IOP?
Our program is specifically designed for autistic adults and those with ADHD, OCD, or anxiety who are functioning well enough to live at home but require more support than a once-a-week therapy session provides.
How does the "Individual IOP" differ from traditional therapy?
While traditional therapy is usually one hour a week, our Individual IOP (IIOP) provides nine to fifteen hours of specialized clinical work per week. This high frequency allows for faster skill acquisition and deeper emotional processing.
Can I continue to work or attend school while enrolled in IOP?
Yes. Because the IOP is a half-day program (three hours per day), many of our clients schedule their sessions around their existing work or university commitments.
What specific skills are taught in the group sessions?
The Standard IOP focuses on executive functioning, social nuance, emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and vocational readiness—all taught through a neurodiversity-affirming lens.
Is the IOP covered by insurance?
Many PPO insurance plans cover Intensive Outpatient Programs for behavioral health. We recommend contacting our admissions team for a personalized insurance verification to determine your specific coverage.
Do you treat co-occurring conditions like Depression or OCD?
Yes. We specialize in treating the intersection of autism and other mental health challenges. Our clinicians understand how depression or OCD may manifest differently in an autistic individual.
How long does a typical person stay in the IOP?
While every journey is different, most clients participate in the IOP for 8 to 12 weeks. This duration provides enough time to establish new routines and solidify coping mechanisms.
Are the "Standard IOP" groups large?
No. We intentionally keep our groups small to prevent sensory overload and to ensure that every participant has the opportunity to be heard and supported by our specialists.
Can I switch from the Standard IOP to the Individual track?
Yes. We regularly assess client progress. If a client finds group settings too taxing, or if they require more intensive one-on-one vocational coaching, we can transition them to the IIOP track.
Is family therapy a required part of the program?
While the primary focus is on the adult client, we strongly encourage family involvement. Family sessions help improve communication and ensure that the client’s home environment supports the progress made in therapy.
